What Not to Do After a Car Accident

When you are involved in a car accident, you may experience shock. Your body may not feel all of the injuries it incurred, but later you will experience pain and soreness. While it’s understandable that you’re in shock after such a traumatic experience, there are certain necessary steps you need to take to protect yourself physically and legally. Remember to stay calm and follow some rules, especially things that you should absolutely not do after being involved in a crash.

Do Not Admit Fault

No matter who you believe to be at fault after an accident, it is never a good idea to admit that it is your fault. Your insurance company will investigate the accident and determine for themselves who is really at fault. You may find that certain circumstances change who really caused the accident. You may even feel like you need to apologize to the other party or to your insurance agent, but it is important that you don’t follow this instinct. It may jeopardize any claims you have.

After making sure everyone is okay after an accident, immediately contact your insurance agent as well as the police. In the state of California, you may not need a police report unless damage was inflicted on state property. Call 911 anyway to make sure that you contacted the right authorities.

When you talk to your agent, give them facts of what happened, but don’t admit to being at fault, not even partially. Give them names, information, and details of all the people involved and exactly what happened to you leading up to and during the accident.

Do Not Settle

It is important to sort all details out with your medical treatments and insurance company after your crash before you settle. Even if you are offered reimbursement right away, make sure you get the coverage you need and the medical attention you need if you were injured.

Don’t Sign Release Forms

Until you are completely sure that you are covered in every way, don’t sign any release forms that can keep you from getting paid on other claims.

Don’t Talk Unless You Have To

Avoid admitting anything to anyone unless you absolutely need to. The only people you need to talk to are your insurance agent and attorney if you decide to pursue a case.

Don’t Let Others Pressure You

After an accident, you may feel lost and in shock. Don’t let anyone pressuring you into not doing something you should just because you feel a certain way after the accident. You were and will be in a lot of stress. Take the necessary steps to protect yourself both physically and legally. If you feel like you deserve to pursue a case, consider talking to a personal injury lawyer who can help you defend your rights.
